Although she is just 19 years old, Simone Biles has become the most decorated American gymnast in history, winning more gold medals in a single Olympics than any other female gymnast. Currently on tour of the United States, Biles spoke to the press about her enduring love for Belize.
Biles holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Belize from her mother, Nellie Cayetano Biles, who is from Belize. On her way to the airport in Los Angeles, Simone Biles told the media that she goes to Belize every year to spend time with her family. Biles mentioned that she and her family like to spend a week together, often enjoying fishing adventures near Ambergris Caye, each member of the family competing to see who can catch the most fish.
Biles noted that Belize has increasingly become a popular travel destination, attributing its rise in popularity due to the fact that there’s something in the country for everyone. Biles spoke about exploring Maya ruins, diving the Blue Hole, snorkeling, and the wonderful beaches. Biles also spoke fondly about her love for Belizean food, including fry jacks with jam, rice and beans, and stewed chicken.
Biles was a member of the Final Five squad representing the United States women’s gymnastics team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Although Biles previously won the world championship for the floor exercise three times, the world championship for the balance beam exercise twice, and was a four-time United States national all-around champion, it was her performance at the 2016 Olympics where she won four gold medals and a bronze medal that catapulted her to global fame.
Part of Biles’ appeal is her well-known struggle to overcome adversity. Born the third of four children to a mother who was suffering from substance addiction and a father who abandoned the family, Biles and her siblings initially spent time in foster care. Eventually, Biles’s grandfather Ron Biles and his second wife, Nellie Cayetano Biles, adopted Simone and her siblings. Ron and his wife Biles are from Belize, but Simone spent most of her childhood in the United States, returning once a year to Belize to visit extended family members.
