September is a fabulous time to visit Belize. The weather is pleasant and warm without being too hot, the crowds of tourists have melted away, there are plenty of affordable flights into Belize, and the country begins several weeks of celebrations in honor of its independence and history.
September in Belize is less a few specific holidays than one month-long celebration of patriotic pride. Here are some of the top days to mark in your September calendar:
Expo Belize Market Place
Patriotic September begins with a huge exposition of products and goods made by Belizeans at the Expo Belize Market. More than 17,000 people are expected to visit the Expo this year to buy locally-made products, snack on Belizean dishes, and enjoy a wide range of entertainment from some of the country’s top musicians and artists.
Throughout the country, Belize will celebrate its heritage with live musical concerts from some of its most beloved musicians. Look for concerts big and small in nearly every village and town.
Battle of St. George’s Caye Day – September 10
Over 200 years ago, Spanish and British naval forces slugged it out for control over what would one day become Belize. After 10 days of hard fighting, British forces were victorious in the waters off of St. George’s Caye Day, and the day is now considered the official kickoff to the patriotic September season.
Independence Day – September 21
In 1981, after a lengthy process, Belize gained full independence from Great Britain on this day. Look for parades, street dancing, and an explosion of red, white, and blue (Belize’s national colors) everywhere you go as Belizeans celebrate the birth of their nation.
Carnival and Jouvert
Jouvert begins at 4:00 AM sharp on the first morning of Carnival. Look for thousands of people marching through the streets of Belize City engaged in a riotous pretend battle involving chocolate, paint, and mud.
Carnival officially begins at 1:00 PM with street parades, live music, and groups of people wearing fancy costumes competing to be crowned King and Queen of Carnival.
